Event scheduled for September 21, 2019, in Garland

The coalition hopes to have several authors present to promote their writing.

The Garland Community Multicultural Commission is partnering with the Garland Independent School District and the cities of Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse to foster literacy throughout the tri-city area. This partnership aims to create a community of readers through a new initiative that encourages everyone to read.

The cornerstone of this initiative is Literacy for Life, a community-wide event that will take place on September 21, 2019, at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. Opening ceremonies begin at 11 a.m., and a plethora of fun and exciting activities for all ages will be ongoing throughout the event until 3 p.m. The goal is to attract and engage everyone in the community in various literacy experiences.

This Literacy for Life community-wide event will have activities for all ages, including:

Book Walk

Literacy Make & Take

Poetry Cafe

Writing Challenges

Book Character Parade

myOn Ready Awards

Free food, prizes, giveaways

The coalition hopes to have several authors present to promote their writing. The author booths are free, and authors are asked to donate five copies for student prizes and giveaways.

Making reading a priority positively impacts student success in working toward college, career and military readiness. An educated, well prepared student body is essential for the future of all communities.
