Books & Barrels in Longview opens, others working on it

“There is light at the end of the tunnel—not a bright light, not a blinding light, but a light nonetheless.”

Books & Barrels is open at 206 N Center Street in Longview! Their Facebook page asks that you please remember social distancing and hand washing. Masks are encouraged but not required.

Village Books, located at 8000 McBeth Way, Suite 180, in the Woodlands, has postponed their opening. In a Facebook post, the owner explained one of the issues she’s encountered:

“I came back home to find out that although all of my t’s were now crossed and i’s were now dotted, my lender couldn’t close on the loan because it was a government program and they were directed to assist with the PPP funding. I have been able to do some store-opening to-do’s out of pocket to keep things moving forward and will keep doing that in the short term. I spoke with my lender yesterday, and there is light at the end of the tunnel—not a bright light, not a blinding light, but a light nonetheless. Hopefully, I can close soon and can then move quickly to finish the build out of the space and purchase displays and inventory.”

In the meantime, you can buy books from Village Books online and join the book club.

In other encouraging Texas bookstore news, Jenny Lawson’s Nowhere Bookshop is now offering curbside pickup at 5154 Broadway in San Antonio. Nowhere was scheduled to open months ago, but then the plague arrived. Nowhere, in partnership with the San Antonio Book Festival (SABF), has also scheduled an online event for this week. Austin’s Lara Prescott [Click to read our interview with Lara.] will discuss her debut novel, The Secrets We Kept, with SABF Director Clay Smith.
