This is your semi-regular roundup of new and recent awards won by Texas books and authors since our last roundup

 

AWARDS 

THE PRINCE AND THE COYOTE written by David Bowles and illustrated by Amanda Mijangos was named a Belpré Young Adult Author Honor Book by the American Library Association. The book, along with his ANCIENT NIGHT and its Spanish version NOCHE ANTIGUA, also Gold Standard Selection Award from the Junior Library Guild. 

 

E.E. Charlton-Trujillo was one of the contributors to THE COLLECTORS: STORIES, which won the American Library Association’s prestigious Michael L. Printz Award

 

REMEMBERING, illustrated by Adriana M. Garcia and written by Xelena González, was named a  Belpré Youth Illustration Honor Book by the American Library Association. 

 

Jasminne Mendez garnered a Belpré Children’s Author Honor Book award for ANIANA DEL MAR JUMPS IN. 

 

THERE WAS A PARTY FOR LANGSTON, written by Jason Reynolds, and illustrated by Jerome Pumphrey and Jarrett Pumphrey, was named a Caldecott Honor Book and a King Illustrator Honor Book

 

David Pyke's RESCUING CROCKETT won a gold medal, American and/or Western, in the 2023 HFC Book of the Year contest. 

 

Yasmine Ramirez received a 2023 Southwest Book Award from the Border Regional Library Association for ¡ÁNDALE, PRIETA! 

 

Carmen Tafolla received the prestigious Texas Institute of Letters Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor given by TIL. 

 

Ron Tyler garnered the Kate Broocks Bates Award for Historical Research and the Ron Tyler Award for Best Illustrated Book on Texas History and Culture from the Texas State Historical Association for his book TEXAS LITHOGRAPHIS: A CENTURY OF HISTORY IN IMAGES. 

 

Jonny Garza Villa’s ANDER & SANTI WERE HERE was named one of four Stonewall Book Awards – Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Young Adult Literature Award Honor Books by the American Library Association. 

 

 

OTHER ACCOLADES 

 

Kimberly Garza was named a NEA Creative Writing Fellow for 2024 by the National Endowment for the Arts. 

 

Colin Winnette’s USERS earned a spot on the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction longlist for 2024. 

 

Texas authors Myra Hargrave McIlvain (THE KNOTTED RING), K.S. Jones (TASTEFULLY TEXAS & CHANGE OF FORTUNE), Thomas Goodman (THE LAST MAN: A NOVEL OF THE 1927 SANTA CLAUS BANK ROBBERY), and Julia Brewer Daily (THE FIFTH DAUGHTER OF THORN RANCH) have titles named to the 2023 Laramie Book Awards Short List.
