Texas bookstores are celebrating, relocating, fundraising, and closing

 

AUSTIN 

Lark & Owl Booksellers hosted the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for Alouette Bistro at Lark & Owl on June 1, 2023. Books and snacks?! Perfection. 

 

CYPRESS 

Starfall Bookshop posted on social media that it is “opening soon in Cypress.” Stay tuned! 

 

DALLAS 

Interabang Books was one of five finalists for Publishers Weekly’s 2023 Bookstore of the Year. Although they didn't win, we are cheering this huge honor celebrating all their hard work to make their community a better place. 
 

FORT WORTH 

Dock Bookshop celebrated fifteen years in business on Independent Bookstore Day April 29, 2023 and are running a fundraiser to help their continued work to be “a force of good” in the community. 

 

HIGHLAND VILLAGE 

Barnes & Noble store in Highland Village, will close in its current location in the Shops at Highland Village but is slated to reopen in the fall in a new space about a half mile away. 

 

HOUSTON 

Basket Books & Art celebrated its first anniversary on May 20, 2023, and commemorated the milestone on June 4, 2023 with champagne, cake, story time for kids, and a solo show of new paintings by William Warden. 

 

KATY 

Brown Sugar Café and Books had been set to close in January of this year. But after receiving a surge of community support, owner Raven White told ABC13 that she is able to stay open. She held a reopening party in April with a huge “block party-style event” and is currently operating in an online-only capacity. 

 

LEWISVILLE 

Barnes & Noble closed its Lewisville location on May 21, 2023, Community Impact reported. In a message posted on the store's Facebook page, the team explained that the store's landlord has chosen not to renew the store's lease after twenty-eight years. The staff will be shifted to other nearby stores. 

 

LUBBOCK 

Wild Lark Books announced it is closing, but the owner said she hopes for a partnership to keep the dedicated space open and in business for the people of Lubbock. For the time being, online sales and the publishing arm, will continue to operate.

 

TAYLOR 

Libros Bookshop, formerly Libros Bookmobile, is now located inside Old Taylor High, Room 114. It specializes in Latine authors & stories and secondhand fiction for all ages. 
 

OTHER INDUSTRY NEWS 

The Austin Business Journal reported that Scribe Media, which offered ghostwriting and author coaching, abruptly shut down May 24, 2023. In a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission, the company said the shutter was the result of "unforeseen business circumstances and faltering business based on unavailability of additional capital." They laid off ninety employees.
